2025 AFCON Qualifier: Super Eagles, Amavubi share points in Kigali
Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Amavubi of Rwanda’s Amavubi Tuesday played out a goalless draw in the second Group D match of the 2025 Morocco AFCON qualifiers.
The result is the third time both teams are drawing their matches in the Rwandan Capital
The first was a 2006 World Cup qualifier when Obafemi Martins cancelled out Jimmy Gatete goal scored in the early minutes of the second half.
The next time was an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in 2012 and that ended goalless draw just like the one Tuesday’s encounter.
Amavubi will have their goalkeeper, Fiarce Ntiwari to thank for putting up a superlative performance that prevented the Super Eagles from gaining the maximum points in the encounter watched by the Rwandan President Paul Kigame.
The result not withstanding, Nigeria still leads Group D pending the outcome of the encounter between Benin Republic and Libya in Abidjan. Only Libya will be able to upstage Nigeria after the MatchDay 2 if they are able to beat Benin by more than three goals.
However, the Super Eagles still have unfinished business with the Rwandans. Apart from the return leg of the AFCON qualifiers slated for November, 19, both teams still have two outstanding World Cup qualifiers in Kigali on 17 March next year and in Nigeria on 1 September 2025.
Super Eagles next AFCON qualifier game will be an home game against Libya on Monday October 7.
