All Nigeria Trials ends on high Note, As AFN Shifts focus on CAA Region ll Senior Athletics Champs in Ghana
Sequel to a successful hosting of All Nigeria Athletics Championships in Lagos, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) is now focusing on the CAA Region II Senior Athletics Championships holding in Ghana.
According to AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa, this shift in focus follows the conclusion of the Road to Tokyo All Nigeria Trials in Lagos.
He commended the athletes’ resilience, highlighting their impressive performance during the trials at Yabatech, which saw some qualify for the Tokyo Worlds.
He however stressed the Federation’s focus have shifted to the Region ll Senior Athletics Championships in Ghana which he emphasised will be happening in the next one week in Accra, Ghana
The AFN President expressed confidence in the nation’s remaining athletes qualifying for Tokyo at the Championships in Ghana.
Okowa expressed his sincere appreciation to sponsors, including Arise News, Premium Trust Bank, and the National Sports Commission, for their substantial support, which greatly contributed to the success of the National Trials.
He further confirmed that athletes were highly motivated and eager to deliver exceptional performances in Tokyo. “Nigeria’s top athletes have given their assurance of a strong performance, and the Federation, along with our sponsors, is committed to providing them with all necessary support to excel at the forthcoming athletics championship.”
The Trials’ top performers, including the newly crowned Nigerian sprint champion, Israeli Sunday Okon (10.04secs), the current world 100m hurdles record holder, Oluwatobiloba Amusan (12:12sec), and others, have resolved to bring Nigeria to the podium in Japan next month
