Pro- Wrestling championship to herald National Sports Festival – Chief Uche
..As Federation seek Gov. Abiodun's approval
As Ogun State Government is beaming with confidence ahead of the hosting of the 22nd National Sports Festival tagged ‘Gateway Games’ next year, the President of the Nigeria Professional Wrestling Federation (NPWF) High Chief John Uche has sent a letter to Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun intimating him about his intention to promote an international pro wrestling championship in the state to herald the National Sports Festival.
The state government had earlier in May, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development on the sports fiesta. During the occasion, Governor Abiodun told the Federal Government’s delegation led by then Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, that Ogun State was ready and willing to host a world-class festival come year 2024, adding that the state has capable hands and sponsors ready to support the bid.
The wrestling Federation’s President while expressing the Federal Government’s acceptance of the proposal noted that the choice of Ogun State as the next host of the National Sports Festival was due to its culture of sports development, unrelenting sports promotion of over the years and availability of sporting infrastructure and potential to host a befitting festival that would linger for a long time.
Chief Uche during his address advised to the Nigerian professional wrestlers to be fully prepared as plans are in top gear to host a world class pro wrestling championship in Abeokuta Ogun state not only to herald the National Sports Festival but also commemorate the 42nd year anniversary of the Nigerian Pro Wrestling Federation which should have been held in September this year.
He thanked the Governor for his consistency and doggedness over the years in building Ogun State despite the numerous challenges besetting the country.
‘’I want to sincerely thank your Excellency for your visionary leadership which has undoubtedly propelled Ogun State to new heights. “Your governance strategy showcases unwavering commitment to the people’s aspirations and sets a stage for accountability and transparency. It’s on record that through strategic planning, the people’s governor have addressed all the critical sectors such as education, healthcare, sports, infrastructure and agriculture as well as fostering sustainable development and economic growth’’ chief Uche hinted.
In a letter sent to the Executive Governor of Ogun State His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun seeking his approval to host the championship scheduled to take place on Saturday 2nd December at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta he sought the Governor approval on the hosting.
“Nigerian Professional Wrestling Federation is appealing to your Excellency to approve and be our Chief Host on the international Wrestling championship/ 42nd Year Anniversary celebration that will showcase the best professional wrestlers in Nigeria and the African continent. We have great and talented grapplers in different categories” chief Uche explained.
According to the wrestling boss, celebrating sons and daughters of Ogun State who have done well in all spheres of life though the championship is another key factor as the event will also be used to showcase talents such as Mightyman the NPWF heavyweight champion and title holder, Mr. Sharpman, Aliking the current holder of the peace trophy, while the national ladies title fight will be between Stylish ‘’J’’ of Anambra and Triple ‘’J’’ of Jos, Plateau State. The event will feature three title fights and four supporting bouts which will be explosive with scintillating pro wrestling display’’ he concluded.
