National Youth Games : Kwara State dominate scrabble Team event

Kwara State has won gold in both the male and female scrabble event at the ongoing 8th National Youth Games (NYG), holding in Asaba, Delta State.

The boys from Ilorin did not taste the bitter pills of a defeat on Monday as they made an impressive 8 games with a high cumulative points of plus 2682.

Team Bayelsa took the silver, with a plus 612 cumulative point. The wordsmiths of Bayelsa were closely followed by Team Ekiti with 5 wins and a plus 677 cumulative point.

In the female event, Team Kwara was making it’s voice heard loud and clear, winning 7 games with a huge cumulative point of 1813 to clinch gold.

Cumulative points was the deciding factor as impressive Team Anambra picked silver with a higher cumulative points of plus 1170 over Team Ogun with 1170 points despite winning 6 games each.

This is the first medal for the Gateway state in Scrabble at the Youth Games.

While others were smiling at the females’ event Team Oyo had their faces buried as they failed to win a single game.

The sterling performance of Team Anambra caught the eye of the Head coach of the Nigeria Youth Scrabble Team, Samuel Eromosele.

Eromosele had some sweet words for the Scrabble Amazons from the Light of the Nation, stating that they are a force to reckon with.

Leading the Anambra Scrabble Team is spirited Victoria Chukwuemeka, who was difficult to deal with in the females’ singles with a 10 over 10.
Her outstanding performance and her dexterity on the board swept the Youth coach of his feet.

”Anybody could have gone on a seemingly safe bet that Victoria Chimamanda Chukwuemeka was not in contention for the singles gold medal but see what she has achieved! Perfect score of 10/10 in the singles and leading her seemingly weak team to the silver medal in the team event, as we await the doubles event, she is the focal point of the NYG,” he stated.

Victoria’s first-class outing has not only brought her to the lamplight at the Games tagged Asaba 2024, but has also booked her place in the Nigeria Youth Scrabble Team.
