Basketball: Record entries for FAZ3 Academies Tourney
A high number of entries have been received for the inaugural FIBA Africa Zone 3 (FAZ3) Academies Basketball Tournament, set to take place in Lagos from July 4 to 8, 2025.
This landmark event, the first of its kind in the Zone, has generated significant excitement across the Zone with teams from Ghana and Benin Republic having confirmed their entries as additional entries are expected from other countries in the zone by the June 20 deadline for confirmation.
Speaking in Lagos yesterday, Chair Person of the Organizing Committee, Elder Toba Shinkaye said the event, originally scheduled to hold at the Warriors Basketball Court in Ilupeju, will now host some matches at the Dolphins Indoor Basketball Court at Onikpètèsi, Lagos, bearing in mind the number of matches to be played against the backdrop of the rainy season.
Preparations are in full swing to welcome both foreign and domestic teams, as Lagos positions itself to host what is expected to be a thrilling showcase of young basketball talents. Enthusiasm is high among participating academies, with many describing the tournament as a much-needed platform to spotlight the region’s emerging players.
In addition to the competitive action on court, Webber Engineering Nigeria Ltd is planning a vibrant entertainment package for spectators, including a high-energy dunk contest and other side attractions designed to boost fan engagement.
Speaking ahead of the event, Mrs. Barbara Harper, Vice Chair of the Organising Committee and Chairperson of the Lagos State Basketball Association, expressed optimism about the tournament’s prospects.
“I’m excited about the responses we have gotten so far and I look forward to us having a good tournament,” she said.
Also commenting, President of FIBA Africa Zone 3, Col. Sam Ahmedu (Rtd), described the initiative as a milestone for basketball development in the region.
“This will be the first time we are hosting an academies tournament in Zone 3, and I’m looking forward to seeing best of young talents.”
With just over two weeks to tip-off, anticipation continues to build for what promises to be a festival of basketball and a defining moment in the growth of the game across the region.
