Former Super Eagles Goalkeeper Peter Rufai Dies At 61

 Few weeks to the burial of former Super Eagles handler and Captain, Chairman Christian Chukwu, Nigerian football family has again been thrown into. mourning following the reported death of legendary goalkeeper of the national team, Peter Rufai.

According to a report monitored on Radio Nigeria, Rufai died Thursday morning, July, 3, 2025, few weeks to his 62nd birthday after battling for an undisclosed illness

Although his family members are yet to make a formal announcement of his death, but a top Lagos State Government official confirmed it.

Regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers, the former Stationery Stores and Go Ahead Eagles shot stopper had an illustrious career, earning 65 caps for the national team, including appearances in two World Cups and the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph.

He competed professionally in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain, in a senior career that lasted 20 years.
