AFCON : Nigerian High Commission in South Africa issues advisory to Nigerians ahead of Super Eagles/ Bafana Bafana match

The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has issued a statement advising Nigerians living in that country to be security conscious ahead of the AFCON semi-final match between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

The two teams will Wednesday, February, 7 meet at Stade De Bouake, Bouake, Cote d’Ivoire to determine who amongst them will qualify for the finals of the tournament.

According to a statement by the Embassy, it has observed some inflammatory online comments made by a section of South African citizens threatening Nigerians living in that country largely influenced by the AFCON semi- final match between both countries.

The Embassy noted that most of the comments consists of veiled threats against ‘ Nigerians cooking jollof rice’ before the match and showing pepper to Nigerians if the Bafana Bafana lose to the Super Eagles.

In view of this, the High Commission advised Nigerian community in that country to be watchful of their utterances, be mindful of where they choose to watch the match especially in public places and refrain from engaging in loud, riotous or provocative celebrations should the Super Eagles win the match.

The High Commission finally advised Nigerians to maintain the good conduct they’re known for and be law abiding before, during and after the match just as they were advised not to reciprocate any provocation but to report same to appropriate authorities.
