Boxers show class at Day 2 of YUCATECO WBC Amateur Boxing Championship

It was an action filled day Friday as the maiden YUCATECO WBC Amateur Boxing Championship enters Day 2 at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of Teslim Balogum Stadium Surulere Lagos.

All the twenty fights on the card lived up to expectation as fighters took turn to entertain the crowd who were yelling for more action as the fights lasted.

The first fight of the day was a walk over for Nigerian Samuel Dahunsi who was declared winner without throwing a punch against his Beninois opponent Benedict Tetteh in the 52kg.

In another 52 kg clash, Nigerian Farouk Oshikoya recorded a unanimous decision victory over Ghanaian Gabriel Addo with another Nigerian Mayowa Gbadeyan recording another unanimous decision victory over Peter Okoro of Benin Republic in their 56 kg clash.
Hard fighting Ugandan pugilist, Balyegesa Benon lost narrowly by 3-2 split decision to Nigerians Quam Museru in their 56 kg encounter even as Habeeb Ajisola fighting in the 60 kg recorded a unanimous decision victory over fellow Nigerian, Rilwanu Salawu.

Ugandan Shakur Mugambe was too strong for Beninois Agbotomey Houkpe whom he defeated by unanimous decision in their 60kg fight while his fellow Ugandan, Muleme Katabula was not lucky against Nigerian Abdulramon Abdulwahab whom he lost to by unanimous decision in their 64 kg clash just as Oluwaseun Abiodun defeated fellow Nigerian, Quadri Ilori by 3-2 split point decision in another 64kg fight.

Ugandan Battle Nuhu fighting in the 69 kg wasted no time in dominating his Nigerian opponent, Adetayo Abiodun whom he defeated by unanimous decision with Abdulsalam Alata recording another unanimous decision victory against fellow Nigerian, Alabi Olamilekan in another 69 kg fight.

The 75 kg fight between Nigerian David Akintola and Ugandan Isaac Ssenyange ended in favour of Akintola who won by unanimous decision while the all Nigerian fight in the same 75 kg between Daniel Joshua and Lawal Ismail was won by the former through unanimous decision.

In the female category, Pauline Assogba of Benin Republic recorded a unanimous decision victory against Nigerian Aliyat Adeniji in their 51kg contest while Nigerian Ayomide Mayowa recorded a 3-2 split point decision against Ugandan Maduwa Brenda in a keenly contested 51kg fight that swept the fans off their feet as the fight lasted

It was an all Nigerian affair in the 54kg clash between Kadijat Ajishola and Hawawu Ogunmodede with the former running away with a unanimous decision victory with Shakirat Kareem losing by unanimous decision to fellow Nigerian, Fathia Gafar in their 54 kg contest while in the 57kg, it was the turn of Aishat Gbadamosi to defeat Amirat Adeshina by a unanimous decision.

In another all Nigerian female 57 kg clash,Fathia Suliamon recorded a unanimous decision victory over Modiat Oladosu just as Precious Anine fighting in the red corner, won her 60kg fight against Mutia Adebayo by unanimous decision with Nigerian Anuoluwapo Akanni beating Ugandan Fatimo Nabikolo by a unanimous decision.

Meanwhile the Chief Executive Officer of YUCATECO Boxing Promotions, sponsor of the championship , Honorable Omonlei Yakubu Imadu has expressed happiness with the performance of the boxers just as he assured that all logistics have been put in place for an exciting finals.

According to Imadu who also doubles as the President, Boxing Promoters Association of Nigeria, the presence of President of African Boxing Union, Houcine Houichi and other top boxing officials from such countries as Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Togo and Benin Republic is an indication that the championship has come to stay.

The event which serves as a qualifier for the maiden WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup in Mexico is featuring pugilists from eight African countries. The boxers are competing in eight weight divisions for the males while fights are holding in five weight classes for the females.
The Most Valuable boxers in both categories will be decorated with the prestigious WBC Amateur title belts. The finals comes today , Saturday, February, 8, 2025.
