Corpse of late Nigerian boxer, Olanrewaju arrives the country, to be buried Wednesday


Tears flowed freely on Tuesday evening with tributes pouring in from many quarters when the corpse of late Nigerian former Light heavyweight champion, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju arrived at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos.

Olarenwaju whose corpse arrived wing 13 of the airport, through Ghana Airways died in the ring in Ghana nearly three months ago during a fight with a Ghanian boxer

On hand to receive the corpse were board members of Nigeria Boxing Board of Control ( NBB of C) led by it’s President, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, members of Nigeria Football Supporters Club led by the National Chairman, Ambassador Rev. Samuel Ikpea, members of Ghana National Supporters Union led by the President, Abraham Boakye A K.A One Man Supporter, coaches, boxers, friends and family members of the deceased.

Receiving the corpse, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo described his death as a big loss to Nigerian boxing, noting that he will be highly missed by the country’s boxing community.

The NBB of C President promised that his board will continue to ensure adequate medical tests for boxers before they step into the ring to avoid future occurence.

Ladipo while commensurating with his family prayed that God will grant his soul eternal rest and give those he left behind the fortitude to hear the irreplaceable loss.

In his remarks, President of Ghana National Supporters Union, explained that they came to Nigeria in large numbers to sympathize with their fellow West Africans following the ugly incidence which occured in Ghana; saying that they are highly grieved by the death of the promising boxer.

” We came to Nigeria to express our sympathy to the country as well as show solidarity with Nigeria Football Supporters Club who we have a good working relationship with.

” The death of the boxer on Ghanian soil is very unfortunate and in Supporters Club, we believe we’re one big family and as such we came in our numbers to sympathize with Nigeria because we feel your pain

Also speaking National Chairman of Nigeria Football Supporters Club Ambassador Rev Samuel Ikpea while regretting the untimely death, described the condolence visit by their Ghanian counterparts as a good development which he said will help in further cementing the cordial relationship between the two clubs.
Meanwhile, the remains of the late Olarenwaju will be buried Wednesday, June, 18, 2025
