CYF begins second Edition of Prisons Sports Outreach programmes
The first phase of the 2025 edition of the annual Prison Sport Outreach programme which started at the Medium Correctional Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos, ended at the weekend with various teams like Joy, Peace, love and Faith participating in the weeklong competition.
Events competed for include, Athletics, Basketball, Football,Table- Tennis and Tug-of-war among others.
The programme is organized and powered by the Christian Youth Foundation ( CYF ), under the Leadership of Ambassador Chucks Onyekwena, the President of the CYF.
After the successful event at the Medium Centre, attention will be shifted to the Maximum Prison, Kirikiri, Apapa this week for the second phase of the programme that will be rounded up on Saturday 15 November, 2025.
Speaking on the sport outreach, President of the foundation, Ambassador Chucks Onyekwena, said the foundation was started in 2003 by Pastor Bimbo Odukoya in Port Harcourt, the River State Capital before spreading to different prison facilities across the country.
He said the outreach is equally going on in Houston and Texas in the United States of America.
“For this year alone, aside the just concluded Medium Correctional Centre in Kirikiri, Lagos, it has taken place on 29 January, 2025 in Port Harcourt the River State Capital and on October, 15 at the Ikoyi Prison. Lagos.
“The next move is on November, 15, 2025 at the Maximum Prison, Kirikiri, Lagos. Maximum correctional centre Enugu will have it’s own on December, 6.
“November, 19 will be the turn of Romsey Prison facility, Rosharon, Texas while the Memorial Prison facility in Rosharon, USA, will take their turn on 22 November, 2025 before the Carol Vance prison facility Richmond, Texas, takes it’s turn on 29 November, 2025 to round off the foreign year activities for 2025”, noted Ambassador Chuks Onyekwena, President, Christian Youth Foundation (CYF).
He further explained that unlike last year when they provided cash and other incentives to the inmates, they’re providing only food items this year for them and the officers because of the economic situation of the country
