Scrabble: Kenyan’s 25 top players to storm Nigeria for Pan African President’s Cup
Twenty five top scrabble players from “The Cradle of Humanity” Kenya, have confirmed their participation in the inaugural edition of the Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA), President’s Cup scheduled to hold between the 24th and 28th of August at the Orchid Hotel, Ikota-Lekki, Lagos,
Allan Oyende is leading the star studded Kenya team to Lagos for one of Africa’s most prestigious and money spinning Scrabble Championship with 172 wordsmith from twelve countries in Africa and America in attendance. Oyende is ranked 8th on the continent.
Another big name in the Kenyan roaster is Africa’s number 17th player, Gitonga Nderitu alongside Martins Mutahi, Philip Mutinda, Stanley Njoroge who won the 2023 Kenya Masters Series, Benard Amuke, David Kimani, Fred Magu, Richard Okechi, Hillary Busienei, Tarus Kipruto, Andrew Wabwire, Ayub Zande and
Muema Muumbi.
Other Kenya’s heading to the fifth largest economy in Africa are; Wenwa Akinyi who is very fresh from the World Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, Elaine Muturi, Evelyn Njogu, Beryl Okado, Cecilia Ruto, Patricia Mwangi, Joan Wangari, George Kithinji, Winnie Wambugu and the newly elected Executive Committee member of World English Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) Limo Kipkemoi.
Besides Limo Kipkemoi, two other Executive Committee members of WESPA, Engineer Toke Aka the President of Nigeria Scrabble Federation and Haruna Adamu the President of Scrabble Association of Ghana will be gracing the PANASA President’s Cup.
Nigeria will be represented by 95 players at the championship that has in attendance players from Cameroon, Botswana, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda, United States of America and Zambia.
Meanwhile, the continental body governing the game of words has named the third-placed trophy after a strong pillar and a very passionate scrabble supporter, Engineer Ojior Osikhena.
The top prize at the President’s Cup is named after another consummate scrabble lover, Engineer Gbenga Ojofeitimi while the runners-up trophy has the stamp of S.M Quartey.
Over 25 million naira that’s about 32,000 dollars has been set aside as prize money for the President’s Cup with the winner going home with a princely sum of 5,000 dollars along with the Engineer Gbenga Ojofeitimi trophy.
The Gbenga Ojofeitimi trophy is a 44cm tall Cuchulainn Crystal Trophy and it comes with a lid and polished wooden base.
