Go Round FC brace hero, Ugwu gets the plaudits from Elechi

Go Round FC coach, Ngozi Elechi was full of praises for Onyedikachi Ugwu who got a brace as his side won 2-0 over Abia Comets on Sunday.

Ugwu got a brace in the 80th and 86th minute, after coming in as a second-half substitute for James Eronje and Elechi was full of nice words for him.

“He is a player we know so well. We know that if we start him, he may not do too well so we decided to monitor his situation that every time he comes on, he does well, even when we were in the NPFL,” Elechi said.

“He had left for Crown earlier on but we begged him to come back. You can see the applause from the fans because of the good deed from him.

“It was a good one because we drew away from home and we needed to win this one to consolidate.

“We also have this deficiency of not scoring more than one goal in a game so I told the boys to go all out,” Elechi said.

The game had a noon kick-off on the request of Abia Comets and ended 0-0 at halftime after both sides huffed and puffed but could not find a way to break the deadlock in the blistering heat.

The fans began to chant at halftime that they wanted Onyedikachi Ugwu to come on. Ugwu had scored the winner in the 2-1 win at Cynosure FC in Abakiliki and also scored the goal that fetched the team a 1-0 win at home to FC One Rocket.

Shortly after he came on, he pounced on a loose ball in the box to slot home behind the Abia Comets goalkeeper, Ikhana Azeez who had fumbled a high ball in the box. As the Abia Comets defenders failed to make a proper clearance, Ugwu gratefully tucked home a loose ball that fell to him.

Six minutes later, a cross from the left found Ugwu in acres of space, right inside the box. He could not believe his luck as he had all the time to pick his spot before burying the ball behind the hapless goalkeeper, Azeez.
