Godfrey Hospital Amuwo seeks LASG intervention over damage to property

...Accuses hotel of trespass

By Ifeanyi Eduzor

The management of Godfrey Hospital,  situated at  Plot 3554,  Kofo Kaumu  Avenue ( ICAN)  Center Road  Lake View Estate, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos  has accused their neighbor, Sweet Season Luxury Suites of building on its perimeter fencing  which has exposed its staff and patients to danger.

Early this month, a powerful wind storm  blew off part of the hotel’s  roof which landed on the premises of the hospital  causing some damages which the hospital management believes would not have occurred if the roof was not on the  illegal structure  constructed by the hotel on its fence.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that sometime in 2021, the hospital management petitioned the Lagos State Ministry of  Urban and Physical Planning  complaining about the structure being erected on its perimeter fence by the hotel. On-receipt of the petition which was copied to  Amuwo- Odofin Local Government Area, officials of the Local Government  came for on the spot  inspection of the structure after which, they put a seal on it,  mandating the hotel to stop work forthwith. But it was discovered that few weeks after,  they continued with the work not minding series of protests from the hospital.

Our correspondent gathered that since then both parties have not been able to resolve the issue until early this month when serious wind storm  blew off the roof  and landed it on the hospital premises causing some damages which prompted the later to now call on the Lagos State Government  to fully wade into the matter and met out appropriate sanctions to the defaulting hotel.

Proprietor of the hospital Dr Ananti Chinenye told our correspondent that she made concerted efforts to make the hotel management stop the illegal structure but she was ignored probably because they believe they’re above the law.

“The issue of the hotel building on our structure  has been on for quite sometime now, In 2021, we petitioned the Lagos State Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning  alerting them on the encroachment on our property  by the hotel. Officials of the government later came to inspect the place after which they put a seal on the structure but to our greatest astonishment, not quite long, they continued with their illegal work and all our effort to make them see reason why they should discontinue with the work was ignored.

“As you can see,  the roof they erected  on our structure was recently blown off by windstorm  and it landed on our premises causing some damages. We thank God that non of our staff or patient was outside when the ugly incident happened  because it would have caused unimaginable harm to people and that’s why we are appealing to the Lagos State Government to re- visit our petition  and call the culprits to order  before any further damage is done to our property,” she said.

Our investigation  further  revealed that immediately after the windstorm, the hotel management hurriedly parched  up the damage to the wall in order to conceal  any evidence of the damage but the blown off roof and debris that came with it are still in the hospital premises when our correspondent visited the place.

When our correspondent  visited the hotel  to get their own side of the story, a staff who pleaded anonymity  said the hotel manager was not on seat  and he is not authorized  to speak on the issue. He also refused  all  entreaties  to release the number of the manager for further inquires.
