Gumel weightlifting championship hots up in Abuja
Just a day after successfully hosting the 2nd Africa Military Games, Abuja
is agog again as the 1st Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel National Weightlifting Championship takes centre stage at the Package ‘B’ Gymnasium hall of the MKO Abiola National Stadium Stadium, Abuja with a total of 92 lifters ( 51 males and 41 females ) drawn from 17 states from across the country including , the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the Nigeria Police Force ( NPF) in attendance.
Technical Director of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Christopher Nwadei who disclosed this, said the number of participants is really encouraging considering the fact that most states athletes are already busy in camp strategizing for the National Sports Festival.
Declaring the Championship Open, Special guest of honour, Sir Chimdi Ejiogu, 1st Vice President Weightlifting Federation of Africa (WFA) and former President, Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) commended the initiator of the programme for his foresight and urged the athletes to compete well in the spirit of Sportsmanship..
Deputy Secretary General of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Alhaji Mohammed Abdullahi praised the President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Abdul Ibrahim for all he has been doing for Nigeria weightlifting while praying to God Almighty to continue to enrich him with wisdom.
