Ijebu-Igbo Agog For Yucateco Boxing League Final

It’s now a feeling of excitement and anxiety among pugilists in the Yucateco boxing league, as all is now set for the much anticipated grand-finale of the second season of the first ever amateur boxing league in Africa.

The campaign which got on the way in August 2024 with 12 accredited boxing clubs have thus far hosted 516 bouts across the various weight categories. After several weeks of action in the squared ropes, it’s now a defining moment for boxers in the colors of Agulo Seite boxing club, Ogbas Families, Espita BC, and Miramontes boxing club in the male and female categories.

With the highest prize money at stake in the history of amateur boxing in the continent. Plenty of grit is expected when hostilities gets on the way among the clubs on Friday, June 27th, at the newly unveiled Yucateco Arena in Okesopin Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun state.

The individual finalists will also have their day in the squared ropes in the Yucateco Showdown Series Main event on Sunday June 29th at Bintol Hotel In Sagamu, Ogun State. Last Season’s Most Valuable Boxer Abdulwahab Abdulrahman will hope to retain his crown against Riliwan Salawu in the men’s 63.5kg headline contest.

In the women’s category, the attention will be on the 63kg contest between last season MVB and Yucateco Pan-African champion Precious Anine of Espita boxing club and the ever consistent Omolayo Adaramola of E-Francis Aiyegbeni Boxing Club.

The initiator of the Boxing League Omonlei Imadu, CEO Yucateco Boxing Promotions outlines his plans to develop the game across board.

In his words: “We have been able to establish for the second season running that boxing can be truly developed across board if we create a template and activate the necessary machineries to make it work”.

” The process must be holistic, hence our plans not only covers the boxers, but it also cut across the development of the coaches, referees, judges, R&J, as well as the training of our medical personnels, we have created a structure that will transform boxing in Nigeria”. Imadu stated.

The purse money for the winning club of the Yucateco boxing league season 2 is N50 million. There will also be individual prizes for outstanding boxers across the 13 weight categories.
The first position will pocket N 2 million, the runners-up will smile home with the sum of N1 million, while the third placed will receive a consolation prize of N500,000.
