As players across Ghana gather this Saturday to honour and participate in the Kofi Acquah 40th birthday Scrabble Bash, Head Marketing of the country’s Scrabble Association Henry Adote-Akagbor says the championship will help their players in preparation for the 2024 African Scrabble Championship.
Acquah, a strong scrabble supporter and player is using the commemoration of his landmark birthday as another means of creating and sustaining active competition for the players especially, after the success of Ghana’s hosting of the 13th African Games.
Over 30 players comprising male and female will compete in a single category where cash prizes of 1500 cedis will go to the winner while players who finished from the 2nd to 5th will receive 1,000, 600, 400 and 200 cedis respectively.
Venue for the scrabble fiesta holding at the Wanshi Gardens, Accra has been organised for the day’s occasion.
But beyond the money, title, trophy and celebrations, Adote-Akagbor believed the one-day tournament is offering more valuable benefits to participants especially as another big tournament in October beckons on the continent, the African Scrabble Championship (ASC) in Sierra Leone.
“Most players are taking this event to sharpen themselves and tackle loopholes in their strategies”, he continued, “Those who are favorites to qualify for the ASC will also be under pressure to perform to clear doubts about their form as most underdogs are also well prepared.”
Adote-Akagbor who is in-charge of logistics for the event explained that the Kofi Acquah 40th Birthday Scrabble Bash has helped to put players on their competitive edge as that have to train hard and perfect their strategies before today’s symbolic gathering.
” It’s really important because most players like myself have really prepared for months to play alongside the masters and see how we could fare if were to play competitively.”
