National Youths Games: Team Oyo Stranded Over Lack of Funds

With the opening ceremony for the 9th National Youth Games scheduled to take place on August 29 in Asaba, Delta State capital, Oyo contingents are still stranded at the Lekan Salami Stadium Ibadan with slim hope of being able to attend the biennial games.

The young athletes mostly in their teens in large numbers with high hopes before leaving their different homes of making appearances at the games were seen looking helpless as on Wednesday afternoon of filling this report.

None of the officials of Oyo State Sports Council approached are willing to say anything to the press but investigation by our correspondent, revealed that there’s no financial provision for them from the Oyo State government to make the trip despite their file being with the governor for approval for about three months.

It was in the news that the governor had proceeded on an annual leave thereby delegating powers to the Deputy Governor to take charge of every affairs of the state.

The main organizing committee, National Sports Commission (NSC) reiterated its commitment to delivering a well-organised event that not only showcases Nigeria’s next generation of sports stars, but also promotes unity, discipline, and excellence through sports.
