Nigeria’s Pillar of Sports Commends SWAN on Its 60th Anniversary Celebration
The Nigeria’s Pillar of Sports, Chief Donatus Agu-Ejidike, JP, has extended a heartfelt commendation to the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) on the celebration of its 60th anniversary, describing the milestone as “a proud testament to six decades of resilience, commitment, agenda-setting, and professionalism in sports journalism.”
Chief Agu-Ejidike praised SWAN for maintaining its pivotal role as the watchdog, and voice of integrity, setting development agenda in Nigerian sports, noting that the association has, over the years, evolved into a formidable force shaping sports narratives, holding stakeholders accountable, and amplifying the achievements of Nigerian athletes both at home and abroad.
“SWAN has been the conscience of Nigerian sports, documenting our triumphs, interrogating our challenges, and projecting our heroes. Sixty years in this noble calling is not a mere number; it represents decades of sacrifice, consistency, and passion for national development through sports,” the Pillar of Sports stated.
The Anambra-born Sports philanthropist particularly lauded the association’s decision to recognize and honour distinguished personalities and institutions that have contributed immensely to sports development in Nigeria. He described such recognition as “A noble act that not only rewards merit but also inspires future generations of sports administrators, athletes, and journalists.”
“By celebrating those who have laboured for the growth of sports, SWAN has reinforced the culture of appreciation and excellence which our country sorely needs. Recognition fuels patriotism; it keeps the fire of service burning,” Agu-Ejidike said.
The Pillar of Sports further called for deeper collaboration among stakeholders, including the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), corporate organizations, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF), Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) Nigerian Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF), and the media, to reposition Nigerian sports for global competitiveness.
He emphasized that sports remain a unifying and transformational tool that transcends tribe, religion, or politics.
“As we celebrate SWAN at 60, let us remember that sports is not just entertainment; it is an industry with the potential to employ millions, promote peace, and strengthen national unity. We must invest in it deliberately and sustainably,” the Patron of the Nigerian Football Supporters Club added.
He congratulated all past and present SWAN leaders for their vision and courage, urging younger sports writers to uphold the ethics of fairness, accuracy, and patriotism in their reportage.
He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting all initiatives aimed at promoting sports development in Nigeria.
“The story of Nigerian sports cannot be told without SWAN. I salute every pen, every camera, and every voice that has carried the torch of sports journalism for 60 unbroken years,” he concluded.
