Nnamdi Kanu’s trial to continue July 26

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu is to have another date in court on July 16 in Abuja.

The Federal High Court, Abuja Division, on Tuesday ordered his detention in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) after his was rearrested and swiftly arraigned.

Kanu, who has been on the run since he was granted bail over his trial for treason in 2017  resurfaced in controversial circumstances and was arrested by joint security operatives of the government.

Another version has it that he was extradited from the United Kingdom (UK) where he had spent much of his time coordinating the campaign of his pro-Biafra group.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who announced the development in a joint press briefing with the DSS and Police, disclosed that Kanu was arrested on Sunday, June 27, 2021 but did not reveal the location of his arrest.

However, when he was brought before Justice Binta Nyako, she granted the request for his remand by the Federal Government represented by its lawyer, Shuaibu Labaran.

While ordering Kanu’s remand in the custody of the DSS, Justice Nyako also held that the prosecution should inform his lawyer of his rearrest and remand in DSS custody and adjourned till July 26 for a continuation of trial.

The IPOB leader jumped bail in 2017 and was consequently placed on the wanted list of the Federal Government.
