Lekki Scrabble Club marked it’s first participation in a continental team championship when it’s LSC Drones competed at the Pan African Scrabble Association’s 2nd President’s Cup ‘The Triumvirate Showdown’ in the Kenyan capital city of Nairobi in August.
The team with Nsikak Nyam, Osikhena Ojior and Nigerian champion George Ezinore pulled it’s weight in the field which featured 29 other teams at the 4-day tournament.
The all-Nigerian cast club showed it’s strong prowess and strategic knowledge of the game as it marked it’s territory as leader in Pool E in the first phase after 15 rounds to move into Pool A where all five group leaders were categorised for the final phase.
Ojior and Ezinore had an identical score of 11-4 with +739 and +725 cumulative points respectively to lead the standing while Nyam shore up with 9-6 +93.
LSC Drones didn’t hold back as it pushed, expanding it’s influence by conquering rivals on the word-and-number board as the trio representing the club, fended off challenges as individual players picked up precious points in the tough tournament tagged ‘Triumvirate Showdown’.
In the end, the team finished as first runner-up behind winner Blitzkrieg but, beyond the achievement, the club was able to expand it’s influence from the Peninsula in Lagos to the continent of Africa where players from The Gambia, Kenya, Cameroon, Ghana and Uganda felt it’s presence directly while the global audience took notice of LSC as a strong promoter of the mind game.
LSC Drones’ impact on one of the biggest stages in Africa through it’s performances has earned the club more attention and admiration as it’s foremost tournament, the Lekki Scrabble Classic holds this September.
As the countdown begins to the 27-28 dates, the Classic will again serve as a quality rendezvous for top players within and outside Nigeria test their wits and skills especially with the 2025 World English Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC) scheduled for November in Accra, Ghana.
Last year’s edition witnessed a robust attendance as Ghana’s Charles Tachie-Menson picked the top prize.
