Rivers Utd qualify for CAF Champions League Group Stage
One of Nigeria’s representatives in this year’s CAF Champions League, Rivers United have qualified for the Group stage of the money spinning tournament.
They did this Saturday by defeating Black Bulls of Mozambique 3-1 to go through on 3-2 aggregate having lost 0-1 in Maputo in the first leg of the second preliminary round of the qualifiers
The game started well for the Finidi George tutored with Wasiu Falolu opening the scoring in the 15th minute. The Nigerian side continued to dominate proceedings and just three minutes before halftime, Maclyn Biokpo coolly converted from the penalty spot to double their lead.
After the break, the Mozambicans came out fighting, pulling one back through Moctar Diallo just two minutes into the second half.
However, Rivers United sealed victory when Timothy Zacharia struck in the 76th minute to make it 3-1 on the night.
This victory,marks their first-ever appearance in the Group Stage of Africa’s most prestigious club competition.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s other representatives, Remo Stars will take on Mamelodi Sundowns at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday, needing a miracle to overturn a 5-1 first-leg defeat suffered in Abeokuta.
