Swimming: Omire drums support for water sports

Grassroots sports promoter, Chief Austin Omire has called for more attention to be paid to the game of swimming.

Omire who was the chairman of the committee that organized the 5th edition of the recently concluded Kevees Swimming Classic for secondary school students in Rivers State noted that Nigeria is capable of ruling water sports in Africa if some attention is given to it rather than focusing all attention to football.

Omire who is Managing Director of Auspharm Cherist Limited Port Harcourt noted that several Nigerian swimmers who would ordinarily have become world beaters are wasting their talents because of the total neglect of the sports in the country even as he called for the trend to change.

“We have talented swimmers that can go places, especially in Rivers state but the big problem is that nobody is harnessing their talent. Swimming is one sports we should not neglect given the avalanche of medals that can be won in swimming events at international multi sports games,” Omire said.

He was however full of praise for the C.E.O of Kevees Classic Global, Chief Ikenna Okafor who has over the years sponsored the Kevees Swimming Classics for students in Rivers state.

“If other Nigerians and the government emulate Chief Ikenna Okafor we would be making some in road in swimming. I commend him for sponsoring the annual swimming competition for students in Rivers state,” Omire said.
