YUCATECO set to host maiden WBC Boxing Championship
Leading boxing promotion outfit in Africa, YUCATECO Boxing Promotions is set to make history by hosting the first-ever World Boxing Council (WBC) Amateur Boxing Championship in Africa.
This groundbreaking event slated for February 6th-8th, 2025, will take place at the Sir Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
Disclosing this in a World Press Conference on Tuesday to herald the fight, Yucateco Boxing Promotions CEO, Omonlei Yakubu Imadu, said the mission of Yucateco was born out of a desire to transform and enhance the growth of the young ones through African boxing. Now, they have taken a step higher to bring the WBC Amateur boxing to Africa.
“We are determined to develop grassroots boxing in African countries by searching, discovering, cultivating and encouraging boxing talents through consistency, competitiveness and character.
“Because we do not intend to stop anytime soon, we took another bold step to initiate the first-ever World Boxing Council (WBC) amateur boxing championship in Africa,” said Imadu who also doubles as President of Boxing Promoters Association of Nigeria.
Sanctioned by the African Boxing Union (ABU), the tournament will feature amateur pugilists from nine African nations, including Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Togo, Benin Republic, Senegal, Cameroon, and the host nation Nigeria. The tournament takes a knockout format and a special third place game.
The championship also serves as a qualifier for the inaugural WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup later this year in Mexico.
