128 players take to the court as Lagos International Badminton Classics serves off
About 128 players from 13 countries including the United States, Britain and France are presently participating in this year’s Lagos International Badminton Classic which serves off today at the Molade Okoya Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
The Classic, a World Badminton Federation sanctioned event, in it’s seventh edition is the biggest badminton championship in Africa with a jackpot of $15,000.
Nigeria, is leading the pack with 66 players followed by India with 22 while there are players from United Kingdom, France, USA, Germany UAE, Canada, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
Other African countries that registered for the championship are; Benin Republic with 10 players while Ghana and Equatorial Guinea registered one player each
Last year’s edition was won by Brazilian player, Jonathan Matias who defeated Pablo Abian of Spain 21-17, 21-19 in a tension soaked men’s singles final to emerge winner of the 6th edition of the Classics.
