53 Years After Civil War, Santos FC Returns To Nigeria
Nigeria’s foremost fans group, the Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC), are set to make history once again, as well as evoke fond football memories in the people of Nigeria.
The National Chairman of NFSC, Ambassador (Rev). Samuel Ikpea during a chat with the media, disclosed that the famous Santos Futbol Club of Brazil are expected to arrive Nigeria early next month for a series of events lined up to bring back memories of their last visit to Nigeria during their World tour in 1969.
It would be recalled that at that period, the country was involved in a bloody civil war. And the powers of football came to the fore, as a ceasefire was achieved by the warring sides for Santos FC to play a friendly football match against a selected Nigerian side at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium.
During their next month visit to Nigeria, the team are expected to pay courtesy visit on Aare Onakakanfo Chief Ganiu Adams, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, as well as, visit the Brazil Embassy and the National Secretariat of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club.
The delegation would move to Benin City, Edo State to visit the Oba of Benin and then meet the Governor of Edo State, whom they would present their newly launched club jersey, the third ever since the formation of the club in 1912. The team would also play a commemorative ceasefire friendly football match against Bendel Insurance and another selected side at the same Samuel Ogbemudia stadium.
