8th African Nations Championship: Algeria, South Africa complete field for final tourney

The field is now complete for the eighth edition of the African Nations
Championship, earlier scheduled to take place in the month of February
but now rescheduled for 2nd – 30th August 2025.
Algeria and South Africa grabbed the two last qualifying slots and will
both team up with joint-hosts Uganda, Niger Republic and Guinea in group
C.
2018 silver-medallists Nigeria will be up against Senegal, Equatorial
Guinea and Sudan in group D, after earlier-drawn Congo Brazzaville was
thrown out following a protest lodged by Equatorial Guinea.
Joint-hosts Kenya head group A that also includes Morocco, Angola,
Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.
Kenya and 2018 winners Morocco will clash in the opening match of the
tournament.
Tanzania, another joint-hosts, head group B, and will battle Madagascar,
Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Central African Republic – conquerors of
Cameroon. All five will fight for two slots in the knockout rounds.

24th FIFA U20 World Cup: Field is complete as African quartet join the
fray
The field is also complete for the Final Tournament of the 24th edition
of the FIFA U20 World Cup finals, which will be staged in Chile, 27th
September – 19th October.
Two-time runners-up and one-time bronze-medallists Nigeria lead the
African challenge that also includes Egypt, Morocco and South Africa.
Ghana, the only African country to have won the championship (when Egypt
hosted in 1999), failed to reach this year’s global finals after penalty
shoot-out defeat by hosts Egypt in the quarter-finals of the ongoing
African finals.
Nigeria lost to Portugal in the final of the 1989 championship in Saudi
Arabia, and to Argentina in Holland in 2005. After losing their
semi-final tie to Brazil in 1985, the Flying Eagles defeated host nation
USSR after penalty shoot-out to pick up the bronze medals.
