Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has thrown its weight behind the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s sports sector under the leadership of the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Shehu Dikko, describing his reforms as a major step towards building a sustainable sports economy.
The endorsement came during a courtesy visit by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, who led a high-powered delegation to the National Sports Commission at the weekend.
Professor Ahmed described Dikko, an illustrious alumnus of ABU, as a visionary sports administrator whose appointment to lead the country’s sports regulatory body has brought pride to the university community.
He praised Dikko’s commitment to repositioning sports beyond recreation and competition into a thriving economic sector capable of creating jobs, attracting investment and driving national development.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, Dikko has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout more than two decades in the sports industry, championing reforms in sports governance, administration, infrastructure development and sports business.
“For over two decades, we have watched you provide visionary leadership across different segments of the sports industry. Your journey continues to inspire our students and demonstrates what an ABU graduate can achieve through competence, integrity and dedication to national service,” Ahmed said.
The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted ABU’s long-standing contribution to sports development in Nigeria, noting that the institution has produced not only elite athletes but also administrators who have played key roles in shaping the nation’s sports landscape over the past four decades.
He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to working closely with the NSC, particularly following ABU’s designation as one of Nigeria’s six sports centres of excellence and its successful bid to host the 2028 Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games.
Ahmed said the university views both milestones as national responsibilities and pledged that ABU would collaborate with the commission to deliver projects that align with Dikko’s vision of a modern, professionally managed and economically viable sports industry.
He added that the future of Nigerian sports would depend not only on producing champions on the field but also on developing world-class professionals in sports administration, governance and business.
Responding, Dikko expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and the university delegation for the visit and their confidence in the commission’s reform agenda.
The NSC chairman assured the university of a strong partnership aimed at further developing sports and expanding opportunities within the country’s sports industry.
