Nigeria Fencing Federation President Adeyinka Samuel, is confident that hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Federation Championships from August 9 to 14, will spark greater interest in the sport across the country.
Nigeria, which beat Australia to secure the hosting rights, will become the first African nation to stage the senior event of the championships — a milestone Samuel described as historic.
He noted that Nigeria’s growing reputation as a host of world-class tournaments, including the FIE-sanctioned World Cup and African Championships, underscores the nation’s credibility. “This is an opportunity to showcase our ability to host international competitions and to expand fencing into more schools and clubs across the country,” Samuel said, adding that the event will also attract long-term corporate partners to invest in youth development and sports infrastructure.
The championships is expected to draw athletes from about 30 Commonwealth countries, generating economic benefits for Lagos through hospitality, tourism, and entertainment. Samuel emphasized the inclusive nature of fencing, pointing out that participants range from youth to veterans, with competitors as old as 86 set to take part.
“Fencing is a sport for all ages. It keeps you active and healthy, and this competition will highlight its longevity,” he explained.
The 2026 edition will also introduce new features: an under-23 category and wheelchair fencing, with medals awarded for the latter for the first time.
Nigeria will host wheelchair fencers from eight countries, reinforcing its emerging role as a hub for adaptive sports. In partnership with World Ability Sports, an academy will be launched ahead of the championships to train athletes, coaches, and referees in wheelchair fencing — positioning Nigeria as a leader in the discipline across Africa.
Samuel described the event as “something historical, not just for Nigeria but for Africa,” stressing its significance in uniting Commonwealth nations and elevating the visibility of fencing.
With live streaming planned and global attention expected, he believes the championships will leave a lasting impact on the sport’s growth and Nigeria’s standing in the international arena.
