Glasgow 2026: Team Nigeria Opens Day Five on Bright Note With Strong Performances, Gears Up for Athletics Showdown

Team Nigeria made an encouraging start to Day Five of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, recording impressive performances in athletics and swimming as more Nigerian athletes booked places in the semi-finals and set the stage for another exciting day of competition.

Edidiong Udo announced himself in style, storming to victory in Heat One of the men’s 400 metres in 45.73 seconds to qualify for the semi-finals.

Competing in his first international 400m race for Nigeria, Udo won his heat by almost a full second to join Samuel Ogazi in the semi-finals, giving Team Nigeria two representatives in the men’s event.

In the women’s 400 metres, Esther Elo Joseph secured automatic qualification for her maiden Commonwealth Games semi-final after finishing third in her heat in 52.82 seconds.

She will be joined by experienced campaigner Patience Okon-George, who also progressed after placing fourth in her heat with a time of 53.27 seconds.

Alongside Ella Onojuvwevwo, Nigeria will have three athletes contesting the women’s 400m semifinals.

Team Nigeria also enjoyed success in the pool as Abduljabar Adama and Colins Ebingha both advanced to the men’s 50m butterfly semi-finals. Adama finished fourth in his heat in 23.99 seconds, while Ebingha followed closely in fifth with a time of 24.01 seconds, ensuring Nigeria will have two swimmers in the Semi-final later on Tuesday.

Attention now turns to the evening session, where Team Nigeria’s sprinters will continue their quest for medals. National record holder Kayinsola Ajayi, Favour Ashe and Nicholas Fakorede will compete in the men’s 100 metres semi-finals, while Rosemary Chukwuma, Miracle Ezechukwu and Blessing Ogundiran line up in the women’s semifinals. Victory in their respective semi-final races would secure places in Tuesday evening’s finals.

Nigeria will also be chasing success in other events as Oyesade Olatoye competes in the women’s hammer throw final with her sights set on a podium finish, while Patricia Mbata enters the ring for her women’s 75kg boxing quarter-final.

In wheelchair women’s 3×3 basketball, Team Nigeria will face Australia as the country’s athletes continue their push for more medals in Glasgow.

With six gold medals already secured and several medal opportunities still ahead, Team Nigeria remains firmly on course for another memorable day at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
