Team Nigeria Athletics eyes more medals as Commonwealth Games campaign continues

Team Nigeria Athletics will continue its medal pursuit on Friday at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with several athletes in action across track and field events, as the country looks to build on its impressive haul of one gold and three bronze medals.

The day’s programme will begin with Jami Schlueter, who continues his decathlon campaign.

He will compete in the men’s 110m hurdles at 10:05am before returning for the discus throw at 10:50am.

The versatile athlete will also feature later in the men’s pole vault, javelin and conclude his demanding schedule with the 1500m.

At the halfway mark of the decathlon, Jami Schlueter is out side the medal bracket at number 4 with 4196 points.

Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m relay team will also be in action in the opening round at 11:35am, aiming to secure a place in the final and strengthen the country’s medal hopes.

To reach the final, Nigeria must finish among the top four from Heat One that include Australia, Zambia, Jamaica, Sierra Leone, Lesotho and Sri Lanka.

In the field events, Ruth Usoro will contest the women’s long jump qualification in Group B at 11:55am as she targets a place in the final.

The evening session promises to be crucial for Team Nigeria, with several medal contenders in action.

Africa’s leading javelin thrower, Chinecherem Nnamdi, will compete in the men’s javelin final at 8:15pm.

Entering the competition with a season’s best of 84.68m, Nnamdi will be hoping to add another medal to Nigeria’s tally.

Attention will then shift to the track where 23 years old Ezekiel Nathaniel lines up in the men’s 400m hurdles final at 9:00pm.

The Nigerian star, who owns a season’s best of 47.37 seconds, will be targeting a podium finish against a strong field.

Sprinter Udodi Onwuzurike will wrap up Nigeria’s athletics programme for the day in the men’s 200m final at 9:25pm.

Drawn in lane eight, Onwuzurike will be aiming to convert his fine form into a Commonwealth medal. 20.22 second in the semi finals landed him in the final.

With Team Nigeria Athletics already celebrating one gold and three bronze medals, Friday’s packed schedule presents another opportunity for the team to increase its medal count and reinforce its strong showing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
