The nation’s professional footballers body, National Association of Nigerian Professional Footballers (NANPF) has waded into the death of a Remo Stars player, Tiamiyu Kazeem who died over the weekend after allegedly being arrested by the police.
Welfare Officer of the Tijani Babangida led body, Chikelue Iloenyosi in a statement disclosed that the Ogun state police commissioner has personally taken charge of the case, even as he added that the officers who allegedly perpetuated the act have been rounded up.
Iloenyosi who is also the Special Assistant to the NFF president on security stated that the officers who are responsible for the death of the player would have to face the law.
He also called for calm since the police high command is on top of the situation.
“My appeal is that football stakeholders should remain calm. The officers who allegedly committed the crime have been arrested. The CP in charge of Interpol has waded into the matter and the CP Ogun has ordered full investigation into the incident. So, we just have to remain calm. What happened is so painful, those of us in NANPF are devastated,” Iloenyosi stated.
The NFF on their part have sent a letter of condolence to the Chairman of Ogun State Football Association and NFF Executive Committee member, Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi over the untimely death of the Remo Stars player, Tiamiyu Kazeem.
“We are particularly sad about the reported circumstances of the player’s death, as attested to by a team mate who was with him at the time, to the effect that he was arrested by officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) on the claim of wearing military apparel, and was pushed down from a moving vehicle before being crushed by another vehicle,” the NFF stated.
