SWAN To Confer ICON Of Sports In Nigeria Award On Kaduna Governor Uba Sani
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) is set to confer its “Icon of Sports in Nigeria” award on Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, in recognition of what the association described as his administration’s contributions to sports development and promotion in the state.
SWAN National President, Mr. Isaiah Kemje Benjamin, through the Association’s Secretary-General Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, said the recognition is part of the association’s efforts to honour individuals and institutions whose interventions and support have contributed to the growth of sports and created opportunities for athletes, coaches and other stakeholders.
President Benjamin said Governor Sani’s nomination reflects what SWAN considers his administration’s attention to sports development in Kaduna State, particularly support for athletes, sporting activities and initiatives aimed at creating opportunities for young people.
The Association’s leader stressed that Kaduna has a long-standing sporting heritage and has produced prominent athletes, footballers and other sports personalities who have represented Nigeria at national and international levels.
According to the SWAN President, sustained government support remains important to the development of sporting infrastructure, grassroots talent and an enabling environment where athletes can discover, develop and pursue their careers.
“The recognition reflects the importance of sustained investment and commitment to sports development at the sub-national level. We believe that recognising such contributions can encourage stronger partnerships among government, athletes, administrators, the private sector and the media for the continued growth of Nigerian sports,” Benjamin said.
He added that the award is also consistent with SWAN’s broader objective of promoting constructive collaboration among government, sports administrators, athletes, investors and the media in advancing sports development across the country.
The presentation of the award is expected to bring together government officials, sports administrators, athletes, sports journalists and other stakeholders, while providing an opportunity to highlight the role of sports in youth development, social inclusion and national integration.
Kaduna State is witnessing renewed activity in its sports sector, with the administration of Governor Uba Sani stepping up investment in sporting infrastructure, grassroots development and the hosting of major competitions as part of efforts to reposition the state as one of Nigeria’s leading sports destinations.
The renewed drive has included the reconstruction of the historic Ahmadu Bello Stadium, upgrading of the Uba Sani Township Stadium, support for grassroots athletes, increased hosting of sporting events and closer engagement with stakeholders in the sports industry.
In February 2026, the National Sports Commission and the Kaduna State Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding transferring ownership of the stadium to the state for immediate rehabilitation following presidential approval.
In September 2026, the state began hosting the Super Sand Eagles’ 23-day training camp ahead of a series of international engagements, including friendly matches against Senegal and an Africa Cup of Nations beach soccer qualifying fixture against Ghana scheduled for October. The programme, running from September 21 to October 14, represents another opportunity for Kaduna to utilise its sporting facilities while attracting athletes, officials and visitors to the state.
The emerging sports infrastructure is expected to provide a foundation for a broader development system involving athletes, coaches, sports associations, schools, clubs and private investors.
