The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba has directed the Archbishop of the Province of the Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, to proceed on a six-month leave over allegations concerning the diocese.

Ndukuba, in a letter dated Oct. 13, 2026, said the decision was taken to allow a fair and thorough investigation into the allegations and restore peace and reconciliation in the diocese.

The letter referred to various administrative panels set up to investigate developments in Awka Diocese, including a recent visitation team led by the Dean of the Church of Nigeria.

It also referred to a meeting between the Primate and Ibezim on Oct. 9, 2026, during which the report of the visitation team was discussed.

According to the letter, the directive was issued pursuant to Section 29(1) of Chapter V of the Constitution and Canons of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) 2020, which grants the Primate general authority and supervisory powers over the church.

Ndukuba, however, clarified that the leave was an administrative measure and did not constitute a disciplinary sanction.

The Primate appointed the Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, as Supervising Bishop of Awka Diocese and Coordinating Bishop of the Province of the Niger during Ibezim’s absence.

Ezeofor is to assume and exercise all episcopal responsibilities and oversight of the diocese and province throughout the period.

The letter further directed Ibezim to prepare for an immediate handover to Ezeofor and stated that he would not be expected to officiate at any activities of the Church of Nigeria, the Province of the Niger or Awka Diocese during his leave.

The six-month leave takes effect from the date of the letter, although the Primate said the period could be reviewed.

The letter was signed by Ndukuba in his capacity as Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria.
