Omefe highlights importance of NIS Students’ Week
The Students’ Union President of National Institute For Sports ( NIS), Omefe Michael Kanayo said that the students’ week of the Institution which enters Day 3 today ( Wednesday) has given the students the opportunity to showcase what they’ve learnt in the classroom.
The event with the theme; Developing Leaders in Sports began on Monday with a seminar that had Prof. Joseph Olayinka Awoinfa, Director of Sports University of Lagos as the guest speaker and Omefe believes that the week affords the students the opportunity to showcase their abilities and capabilities of what they can offer outside the classroom.
” As you’re aware, the celebration started on Monday with a seminar which had Prof. Olayinka Awoinfa, the Director of Sports, University of Lagos as the guest speaker and it has been a beehive of activities since then.
” We have had basketball, volleyball and cycling while handball and football are ongoing. On Day 2 of the event, a philanthropist by name Webber unveiled the basketball court he renovated for the institution which attracted a lot of people and these people after witnessing the epoch making event, will start talking about how to do more for the country’s sports industry”, he stressed.
On the essence of having a seminar as part of the weeklong event, he explained that it enables students acquire more knowledge on things they’re not familiar with
” The essence of having seminars and workshops during the Students Week is to further buttress the importance of certain areas we’re not familiar with.
“You’re quite aware that we have issues with leadership, issues on how coaches and managers exhibit themselves. So, we have to bring in experts to further lecture us and remind us more about things we are supposed to do as coaches and managers.
“You can equally see the dismal performance of our athletes at the just concluded Paris 2024 Olympics, so we are taking the lead to examine generally the areas we have come short of what is expected of us to do. The seminars will help us correct these mistakes and see how we can get better at the end of the day.
He reminded the students that the week is an occasion to understand themselves more, connect and bound together and show true love to one another.
” It’s important I remind all the students of NIS that the week belongs to all of us and that there’s need for them to understand themselves and show passion and love collectively.
” This showing of love and understanding, made us to have different sports during the week and like I said earlier, we’ve had volleyball, basketball, cycling, handball and football amongst other sports.
The celebration continues tomorrow with a seminar while it would be rounded up on Friday, August, 23, 2024.
