UNILAG Students’ talk tough ahead FASU Games

As preparations are in top gear ahead of today’s official opening of the 11th African University Games being co- hosted by University of Lagos and the Lagos State University, athletes of UNILAG are already beaming with confidence about their chances of making a podium finish at the Games.

Two of the athletes who spoke to newstap.com.ng on their expectations at the Games expressed confidence that they have what it takes to grab gold medals at the biggest gathering of University sportsmen and women in the continent
Godfirst Ukoha Samson , a karate national athlete who will be competing in women 65 kg karate and 67 kg in taekwondo respectively noted that she’s prepared mentally, physically and psychologically to withstand any opposition in her weight category with a declaration that her target is gold medals in the two events.

“We all at UNILAG are excited with the competition that will bring together all athletes from various Universities across the continent and I’m fully prepared for action.
“I’ve been training hard and waiting for the Game to start to show the stuff am made of and I want to assure my fellow students that I won’t disappoint them.
” I have represented Nigeria at international championships in Karate and also represented UNILAG at the NUGA Games where I won silver in taekwondo and I believe that the experience I have garnered all these years, will see me through.
Godfirst who said she is not afraid of opposition from Egyptian’s, South Africans, Tanzanians, Ugandans Ghanaians and athletes from other countries, posited that although she will be having her first competitive fight in taekwondo, she won’t disappoint because her experience as a Karateker will see her through.
” It’s true that I will be having my first competitive fight in taekwondo at the Games but as a martial art practitioner, there won’t be much difference because my experience I’m Karate will count when hostilities begins”, she stated confidently.
In his own remarks Adeniyi Fajenusi  of Computer Science Department who will be competing in 60kg karate noted that he has been looking forward to the commencement of the Games to show the stuff he’s made off in Karate
Some of the games to be competed for are athletics, basketball, badminton, chess, scrabble, E- Sports and handball.
Others are; football, judo, cricket, squash, swimming table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball and karate.
