NUGA President highlights gains of FASU Games

President of Nigerian University Games Association ( NUGA) Engr. Bawa Mohammed said that the two hosts of the recently concluded 11th All Africa University Games ( FASU) gained a lot from hosting the tournament.
University of Lagos and Lagos State University played host to athletes from over 70 Universities from across the continent.Out of these Universities, 21 came from 13 countries outside Nigeria namely; Ghana, Uganda, Burundi, Guinea, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Tanzania, Mauritius, Angola , Kenya and Egypt and Bawa who expressed satisfaction with the Universities describing them as real partners in progress and trail blazers.

According to him, apart from the students having the opportunity to network, make friends across the continent and compete favourably amongst their peers, the excellent facilities provided for the Games will enhance the students performance in various sporting activities.
” I’m highly delighted with the excellent organisation of the two Universities that made the Games hitch free and the Games one of the best organised in the history of the championship.

“The two Vice Chancellors are great Amazons who must be commended for writing the country’s name in gold.

” The face lift they gave to the facilities in their various institutions must be commended and the students will find them useful in their preparations for NUGA Games, National Sports Festival or the next edition of FASU Games in Egypt.
” It’s equally important to state that some of the athletes that performed creditably well will also form.part of the contingent that will represent Africa at the next World University Games.
He charged other Universities in the country to emulate UNILAG and LASU and upgrade their sporting facilities which he said will benefit both staff and students immensely
The Games which was rounded off with a colourful ceremony last Sunday at Lagos State University Sports Centre , saw American University Cairo, Egypt retaining the title they won two years ago in Kenya while Lagos State University and University of Lagos came second and third respectively.
Some of the sports the athletes participated in are; football, athletics, basketball, Volleyball, chess, scrabble, E- Sports, taekwondo, judo and cricket.
Others are; badminton, handball, squash, swimming, table tennis and tennis.
