AFN National Trials: Comfort James Maintains Her Dominance In in 800 meters

Reigning 800 meters national champion, Comfort James on Day 1 of the ongoing athletics national trials proved that she is not yet ready to give up her title when she clocked 2:06.60 to defeat her closest rival, Ramat Jimoh and secure her fourth national title in the event.

James who led the race from start to finish, maintained her composure to hold off Nigeria’s season leader Jimoh in what served as the national trials for the upcoming 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
In an interview with newstap.com.ng shortly after the race, she expressed her excitement at beating off strong opposition to retain her title, just as she stated that her best is yet to come.

“It’s a thing of joy winning my fourth title and I want to give God all the glory for making this possible. I also want to say, that I will not give up until I see myself competing among the best in the world and I know it’s achievable in the next two or three years “, she stated with confidence.

On the general organization of the trials, Comfort whose focus now is the world championship in Tokyo, Japan, gave kudos to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria for putting up such a seamless event with an appeal to corporate Nigeria to do more for the country’s athletics

” Kudos must go to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria for putting together this trials which has enabled all the athletes to showcase themselves in a conducive atmosphere.
“But it’s important that corporate organisations partner with the Federation to achieve more success because athletics is suffering from lack of adequate sponsorship and the earlier this is corrected, the better for the country”, she concluded.
