African School Games: Team Nigeria to Compete in 7 Finals on Day 2 of Athletics, Clinches Two Bronze in Taekwondo
Team Nigeria is set for a thrilling Day 2 of athletics at the ongoing African School Games in Algeria, with athletes competing in seven finals.
In the highly anticipated girls’ 100m final, Nigeria will be represented by Miracle Ezechukwu and Rosemary Nwankwo. They were the both standout performers and the only athletes to run sub-12 seconds in the semis, clocking 11.83s and 11.72s respectively.
The 100m hurdles final will feature Nigeria’s Chinazor Rita Ekwaeme and Bernice Onoriode, who are poised to battle for podium finishes.
In the girls’ 400m final, Jacinter Andrew enters with one of the fastest qualifying times of 56.92s, setting up a tightly contested race.
On the boys’ side, Jesulayomi Ogundijo and Faye Perfect will compete in the 400m final after strong semifinal performances. In the boys’ 100m, Akolo will line up against a competitive field, having won his semifinal heat with an impressive 10.93 seconds.
Jumping from athletics tracks to taekwondo mat, Team Nigeria opened their campaign with two bronze medals on Day 1. David Ibokette secured bronze in the 55kg category, while Unique Umeh also claimed bronze in the 49kg category. Both athletes fought bravely but were edged out in the semifinals by Algerian opponents.
Team Nigeria also recorded two bronze medals in Day 1 of athletics. Judith Ukandu earned a bronze in the girls’ shot put, while Mohammed Jimoh secured third place in the boys’ long jump.
