Nigeria Edge Hosts Algeria in Dramatic Last-Second Victory at Africa Women’s Youth Handball Championship
Nigeria’s Women’s U-18 Handball team ended their campaign at the 2025 Africa Women’s Youth Handball Championship in Oran, Algeria, on a high note after defeating the host nation 29–28 in dramatic fashion on Sunday.
The Coach John Uzor led side, who had already missed out on a semi-final spot, showed grit and determination to snatch victory in the final seconds of the classification match to finish 5th in the tournament.
Nigeria led 13–11 at halftime but were made to work hard in the second half as the Algerians, buoyed by their passionate home fans, mounted a strong fightback. The match was delicately poised at 28–28 heading into the final seconds, with the atmosphere inside the arena electric.

From the ensuing fast break, Ngozi Korie held her nerve to fire home just as the final whistle was about to be blown, sparking jubilant celebrations from the Nigerian bench.
With the win, Nigeria secured 5th place in the championship. However, they narrowly miss out on qualification for both the IHF Women’s U-18 World Championship and the IHF Women’s Intercontinental Trophy.
