Youth scrabble players who flew the Nigeria’s flag high at the recently concluded world championship and the African championship have received financial support from organisers of the Emmanuel Egbele Annual Scrabble Tournament, (EEAST.)
The quartet of Olawale Abdulqudus, Sophia Ekeruche, Prestige Archibong and Joy Nwabuzor earned podium finish at major championships including the World Youth Scrabble Championship held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
and the African Youth Scrabble Championship hosted by Kenya.
Abdulqudus became the No 2 player in the world while 14-year old Ekeruche shocked many with her impressive performance as she became the best female player in the world while she also ruled the African terrain in her category without dropping a game.
Archibong also obtained the prestigious African Youth title subduing all opposition at Brighton International School playing arena.
Their successes have continued to elicit positive raves as the youngsters lead a crop of exciting fresh breeds who many observers believe can challenge the establishment.
EEAST Chief Convener Emmanuel Egbele who presented the cash awards to the players at the closing ceremony of the Lekki Scrabble Classics 2025 said their performance at international tournaments was highly encouraging and satisfying.
“The amazing run of our youth players at the 2025 World Youth Scrabble Championship in Malaysia and the African Youth Scrabble Championship in Kenya is worthy of commendation and support.
When we have players like Olawale Abdulqudus who is the No.2 World Youth Scrabble Player as well as Sophia Ekeruche who finished as the Best Female Player in the world and when you consider how they started especially Sophia, you will agree with me that her development has been astronomical.
“Prestige, the African Youth Scrabble Championship Champion is also a delight! We also have some others who are also giving us some solid hope that one day they might win the senior world championship in the nearest future.
There performance has been encouraging and satisfying that’s why we feel we should support them with cash awards” he said.
