Many feared dead as gas explosion rocks Ibadan Community

A devastating late night gas explosion on Friday shattered the peaceful community of Bioku-Alaadun, Ona Ara Local Government Area Ibadan, resulting in many casualties.

Eye witness account said tragedy struck when a gas tanker exploded while discharging contents into a retail gas outlet.

The explosion, ignited a massive fire that engulfed the premises.The flames spread rapidly, trapping individuals who were close to the shop at the time of the explosion.

Among the casualties was the shop owner, who was said to be supervising the discharge, as well as several passersby caught unaware by the sudden blast.

Residents described scenes of chaos as people scampered for safety amid thick smoke and roaring flames.

However, emergency responders from the Oyo State Fire Services Agency mobilized immediately, with fire trucks navigating the narrow community roads to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes.

The General Manager of the Agency, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the tragic incident and noted that operations were still ongoing to put out the fire.

“Our men are on ground. They are still working. Yes, the incident happened while gas was being discharged. There are casualties, but full details are still being compiled,” Akinyinka said.

One community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity said the residents are devastated by the explosion even as he lamented that continuous gas-related incidents in the state highlights the urgent need for stronger safety regulations and monitoring of gas retail operations.

“We heard a loud bang and everywhere shook. People ran, children were screaming. It’s a terrible night for us here.” he said.

Meanwhile, the exact number of casualties remains unclear, with emergency officials still assessing the situation and retrieving remains from the affected site.

Authorities are now investigating what led to the explosion, amid renewed calls for stricter enforcement of safety procedures in the rapidly expanding gas distribution market across the state.

The Ibadan explosion is a painful reminder of the dangers associated with unregulated gas handling and the urgent need for preventive action.
As families await official casualty figures, the community mourns another avoidable tragedy.
