FG Congratulates ‘Team Nigeria’ For Africa Youth Games Exploits
..Plegdes More Support For Grassroots Sports Development

The Federal Government has congratulated Team Nigeria for an outstanding performance at the just concluded Africa Youth Games held in Angola.
This message was conveyed by the National Sports Commission Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko who commended the team for doing the nation proud in Angola.
His words, “We have shown that it is not all about numbers. We went to Angola with Just 54 athletes competing in 12 sports but bagged a total of 41 medals, 22 of them were gold.
“From the onset we were deliberate to feature sports where we had comparative strength having done our due diligence on the athletes. The team’s exploits have vindicated this.
“While winning medals isn’t the most important thing at this stage, your performance gives us confidence that we have a bunch of podium performers for the future. The future of Nigerian sports is bright indeed.”
He pledged more support for grassroots sports development and schools sports.
“This administration has been very intentional about development of sports down to the grassroots. To buttress how seriously President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR takes this, he has an SSA on Grassroots Sports Development. And we have keyed into this with even more aggressive drive aimed at reviving our schools sports in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and relevant agencies. This performance will encourage us to even do more”, he added.
Team Nigeria finished 5th on the overall medals table behind South Africa, Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia.
