Enugu Residents Ignore IPOB sit-at-home order, open for business
Residents of Enugu the Enugu State capital, Monday failed to comply with the solidarity sit-at-home order issued by the pro-Biafra group, Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
The Group had last weekend through their head of media and publicity, Emma Powerful, issued the order to the South Eastern states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, to sit-at-home in solidarity with Onitsha Main Market Traders whose market was ordered closed by Gov. Charles Soludo of Anambra State.
However, residents of Enugu metropolis did not comply with the order but went about their business.
Petrol filing stations and private transport companies as well as commercial banks that hitherto shut their doors in the past, opened for business.
Our investigation revealed that both public and private schools opened for classes while commercial vehicles plied the roads which used to be deserted especially in the morning hours.
Recall that Gov. Peter Mbah had abolished the sit-at-home long ago claiming that it crippled economic and social activities.
The Akwata Garriki Market that used to witness few or no vehicles from the North, beamed with activities with agricultural products.
Further checks also revealed that some still observed the sit-at-home because some shops in the town and spare parts dealers and artisans closed shop.
“I didn’t go out today, not because of the sit-at-home order but since Monday has become sit-at-home day, I decided not to open my shop,” a trader told our reporter.
He however condemned Gov. Soludo for closing Onitsha Market because of Sit-at-home.
“Sit-at-home has been there all these years. If people chose not to go out for business, you don’t force them. He should have emulated the governor of Enugu State on how he handled the issue instead of shutting the market,” he said.
