First Bank Okwaraji U-16 Championship Will Produce Future Junior Stars- Olopade

The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has expressed confidence that the FirstBank Sam Okwaraji U-16 Championship will serve as a breeding ground for talents capable of representing Nigeria at the U-17 World Cup.

Olopade stated this during the unveiling of the maiden edition of the championship, also referred to as the Memoir Cup, held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

The event is endorsed by the Nigeria Football Federation, Nigeria School Sports Federation, NSC, and the Sports Writers’ Association of Nigeria.

The championship, organised in collaboration with the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, is designed to promote patriotism, education, and youth development through football while preserving the legacy of late Nigerian international, Samuel Okwaraji.

Okwaraji, born on May 19, 1964, was not only a footballer but also a qualified lawyer with a master’s degree in international law. He tragically passed away on August 12, 1989, after collapsing during a World Cup qualifier against Angola in Lagos; a moment that remains etched in Nigeria’s sporting history.

Speaking at the event, Olopade commended the Chairman of the Steering Committee, Senator Osita Izunaso, for sustaining the late footballer’s legacy through the initiative.

“Okwaraji’s legacy transcends generations and inspires unity, patriotism, and sacrifice among young Nigerians,” Olopade said.

He also praised ongoing reforms at the National Institute for Sports, noting that they align with the NSC’s vision and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

“For the first time, sports has been recognised as a meaningful contributor to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product. This event will impact positively on youths and revive grassroots sports,” he added, while urging corporate organisations to emulate FirstBank’s support.

Izunaso, in his remarks, described the championship as a vital developmental platform for young footballers across the country.

“Participating schools will receive logistics, accommodation, medical services, officiating, and security. This is stewardship,” he said.

He emphasized that integrity would be a cornerstone of the competition, assuring strict compliance with rules, including age verification.

“There will be no age falsification or compromise. Integrity is the foundation,” Izunaso stated just as he called governments and corporate bodies to invest more in grassroots sports infrastructure and development.

Director-General of the National Institute for Sports, Philip Shaibu, noted that the event celebrates a national hero and serves as inspiration for younger generations.

“We are celebrating a legend whose life remains an example for younger ones to emulate,” Shaibu said, highlighting Okwaraji’s unique blend of academic and athletic excellence.
He added that the institute has introduced structured educational programmes for athletes to prepare them for life beyond active sports.

Managing Director of FirstBank, Olusegun Alebiosu, explained that the bank’s support for the initiative aligns with its commitment to youth empowerment and national development.

“This championship provides a platform for discovering talents and instilling discipline, education, and values in young players,” he said, noting FirstBank’s long-standing involvement in sports development.

Also speaking, President of School Sports Federation of Nigeria Mrs. Olabisi Joseph, stressed the importance of combining education with sports development.

“It is a moment to celebrate legacy and inspire generations. School sports must combine education and physical development,” she said, adding that the maiden edition will be held nationwide and feature only boys.

Other dignitaries present at the unveiling included Sanusi Mohammed, President of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria ( SWAN), Isaiah Benjamin, Secretary of Sam Okwaraji Foundation, Chidozie Achonwa and Lekan Alabi.

The championship is widely seen as a significant step toward revitalizing grassroots football in Nigeria while preserving the enduring legacy of Samuel Okwaraji.
