Insecurity: Unknown gunmen kill GEJ’s ex-aide, Gulak in Imo

Ahmed Ali Gulak, former special adviser to ex-President, Good luck Ebele Jonathan, has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Gulak was shot dead in the early hours of Sunday at Umueze Ezemba Junction in Ngor Okpala LGA along the road leading to the Sam Mbakwe International Airport, SMICA, Owerri.
The former presidential adviser was reportedly accosted on his way to the airport from Enyiogugu Mbaise area. His assailants blocked him and shot him twice on the head and he died on the spot.
Unconfirmed sources revealed that the attackers had asked their victim to come down from the car and handover his blue-cloured Toyota Camry car key to them but he refused just as he tried to explain himself to them, before they shot him and he died instantly.
Some people around the area who alleged that gunshots woke them from sleep hinted that the gunmen came in military camouflage and abandoned the man and his car and fled when probably the early morning gunshots alarmed people and attracted public attention.
However, the incident created panic and tension in the airport area and it’s environs as all roads leading to the airport were immediately blocked from human and vehicular movement for hours until the corpse was removed by police operatives.
An indigene of the area who preferred anonymity told our reporter that the villagers were thrown up from sleep when gunshots rented the air that morning only for them to come and behold the blood chilling sight.
According to him, nobody knew who the dead man was until information filtered in later in the day that it was Gulak that was murdered.
Reacting to the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of Imo Police Command, SP Bala Elkana confirmed the incident.
In a press release issued Sunday afternoon, Bala said, “On the 30/5/2021, at about 07:20hrs, armed bandits intercepted and attacked a Toyota Camry cab carrying Ahmed Gulak and two others who were on their way to Sam Mbakwe Airport to catch a flight.
Ahmed Gulak left his room at Protea Hotel without informing the Police nor sister agencies in view of the fragile security situation in the South East and Imo in particular.
“He left without any security escorts and while the cab driver took irregular route to the airport, six armed bandits who rode in a Toyota Sienna intercepted, identified and shot at Ahmed Gulak at around Umueze Obiangwu in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area close to the Airport.
“The Commissioner of Police Imo CP Abutu Yaro, fdc has directed a discreet investigation into the matter as Tactical and Special forces have been deployed to cordone the area and arrest perpetrators.”
