Abia Comets Football Club of Umuahia made a strong start in the Abia State Governor-sponsored Nigerian National League pre-season tournament, defeating Edel FC of Awka 2-0 in their opening match held in Aba.
This tournament, organized in collaboration with the National League Club Owners and Managers Association (NALCOMA), features six teams from the South-East and South-South regions of Nigeria. In the second match of the day, Kun Khalifat FC and Solution FC played to a goalless draw.
The first half ended without any goals, but Abia Comets broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute thanks to an own goal by an Edel FC player. Felix Henry followed up with a second goal just four minutes later to secure the victory.
Chief Boniface Uche, chairman of Abia Comets FC and a board member of the NNL, credited Governor Alex Otti for making the tournament possible, emphasizing its importance in providing teams a competitive platform to prepare for the upcoming season.
After the matches, Abia Comets’ coach, Mr. Kevin Ejeh, praised his players for their fighting spirit, describing their performance as a preview of what fans can expect in the upcoming season. He also expressed gratitude to the Governor for supporting the tournament.
The six participating teams are divided into two groups and will each play three matches, with the top teams from each group advancing to the finals on Thursday.
