African Championship: Lagos Sports Commission DG thumbs up Fencing Federation
. Pledges States' Govt support to all sports
Director General of Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu has commended Fencing Federation of Nigeria on it’s hosting of the ongoing African Fencing Championship even as he stated that the state government will continue to support the development of all sports in the state.
He stated this Wednesday during the opening ceremony of the 23rd African Fencing Championship currently going on at Charterhouse Lekki- Ajah, Lagos
According to him, the tournament is another event that’s putting Lagos State on the world sports map noting that the number of countries participating in the event is a testament that the state’s environment is suitable for international sporting events.
” I’m happy with what I saw here today, it’s absolutely great, exciting and remarkable that this is happening in the state. It also shows that Lagos State is not all about football but supports other sports, be it boxing, athletics, swimming, basketball, wrestling and others
“We just hosted an archery event a few days ago and now hosting fencing and we’ll continue to create an enabling environment for our youths to be gainfully employed through sports.
The Director General while promising that the state will continue to encourage individuals championing the growth of fencing, described the tournament as a strategic collaboration between the state and the Federation to move the sport forward.
He assured that the state government under Governor Babajide Sanwo- Olu will not relent in her efforts in supporting laudable initiatives positing that the Sports Commission will continue to promote the sport and create opportunities for it to blossom
” I want to assure you that his Excellency, Babajide Sanwo- Olu is committed and dedicated to empowering the youths through sports and the fact that the country presented the yongest athletes in both the junior and senior categories of the championship is an indication of our commitment to make the sport grow and improve the talents and potentials of our young people.
” Kudos must also go to the Fencing Federation of Nigeria for putting up this tournament in a wonderful facility that’s comparable to any facility in the world and we as a government will continue to support it in growing the sport”, he assured
