With the rainy season yet to fully set in, residents of Apapa, (especially Olodi area) and those doing business in the Tin Can Island axis are in for another hard time, no thanks to the rains and bad road.
What to expect started to manifest fully with the rain today (Tuesday, June 1) as the Apapa/Oshodi expressway was literally cut off at the Mile 2 axis from the Apapa end.
Traffic stretched from the Vanguard newspapers end up to Second Rainbow bus stop with traffic robbers having a field day even in the afternoon.
It took the quick intervention of a soldier who singlehandedly fought the hoodlums to save some road users who were being harassed and robbed. The hoodlums were primarily targeting Tokumbo vehicles.
The hoodlums openly demanded to be settled by those driving Tokumbo vehicles and other private cars. Those who hesitated in parting with money and other valuables had their vehicles damaged and robbed by the hoodlums who were armed with dangerous objects.
A road user who identified himself as Lanre in an interview with newstap.com.ng berated both the Lagos state and federal government for not matching words with action on the Apapa/Oshodi expressway project.
Lanre who appears to have a good knowledge of how government is going about the Apapa/Oshodi expressway re construction wondered why any sane people would award sections 1, 3 and 4 of the road leaving out Section 2 which runs from Beach Land Estate to Cele Bus stop.
“The way the contract was awarded clearly shows there is something wrong with those who awarded it. It is either they are being mischievous or outrightly sick. It is obvious Sections 1 and 2 are the critical areas. Instead of awarding those two sections first, they awarded contract for Sections 1, 3 and 4, leaving out Section 2 and that is what is making us not to feel the impact of whatever job that has been done so far,” Lanre stated.
It would be noted that Hitech is reconstructing the Apapa/Oshodi expressway which has remained a pain in the neck of the road users despite all the noise being made by Lagos State government that they are winning the Apapa gridlock battle.
