Akinjidi, Banjoko Win NNPC, Ikoyi Club Table Tennis Championship

The 6th edition of NNPC / NUIMS sponsored table tennis championship for members of the prestigious Ikoyi Club 1938 ended on a good note with Dapo Akinjidi and Mrs. Yewande Banjoko winning the male and female singles respectively.

The championship which served off from Monday April, 20 to Friday April, 24 climaxed with the finals in the singles, premiership, veterans singles 60+, veterans singles 70+ and the doubles.

In an entertaining finals that kept guests at the edge of their seats, Dapo Akinjidi defeated Keyinde Lawal by 4-0 of 16-14, 11-7,11,7, 11,7 to be crowned champion while in the female category, Yewande Banjoko defeated B. Bankole by 3-2 of 11, 8, 5,11 , 11,9, 10, 12 and 15, 13 to win the women trophy.

Speaking shortly after his victory, Akinjidi expressed happiness that he defeated his opponent who has beaten him thrice in the past, noting that his decision to attack from the first set gave him victory

” I’m really happy defeating my opponent who has beaten me three times in the past. I did my home work very well and decided that the best way to beat him was to attack and that did the magic for me.

He was also full of praises to the executives of the table tennis section and NNPC for sponsoring the tournament even as he promised to be ready to defend the title during the seventh edition.

Also speaking, Mrs. Banjoko noted that it was not easy defeating her opponent who is an experienced table tennis player but was quick to attribute her victory to hard work.

Earlier in his welcome address, Chairman of the table tennis section of the club, Folunsho Ajilore expressed happiness with the successful completion of the tournament which he said enabled members to relax, compete in a favourable environment as well as showcase their talents.
He described NNPC as worthy partners, just as he commended other corporate organizations that always sponsor tournaments in the club.

Captain of the table tennis section, Odewale Olayinka promised that they’ll continue to sustain the momentum by having many tournaments in the section.
