Students go through hell for NIN registration in Ojo, LASU

Secondary School students who are preparing to write this year’s May/ June West African Examination Council ( WAEC) in Lagos State are presently finding it difficult to register for their National Identification Number ( NIN).
The NIN is one of the conditions for registering students for both WAEC and JAMB.
At the Ojo, Local Government Area Headquarters and MBA Administrative Block of the Lagos State University, students trooped out in their hundreds for the registration but only few were attended to after spending several hours waiting under the sun.
Some of the students who spoke to newstap.com.ng noted that they’ve been coming for the registration for more than two weeks now, missing their classes without success.
According to them, after collecting N100 for registration form from them, they will be told to write down their names and after waiting for many hours only about five persons will be attended to.
They accused those handling the exercise at both Ojo Local Government and LASU of conniving with touts who collect as high as N10,000 before they could be attended to.
” Our education is really suffering because of the NIN registration. For the past two weeks, we’ve been coming here without success.
“Each time, the officials will tell us to write down our names but at the end of the day, they’ll attend to only about four or five people and tell us that there’s no network.
” We think that part of the problem was because Government disconnected network of all the private business centres that usually do the NIN registration and those saddled with it are now capitalising on that to extort as high as N10,000 from our parents for us to be registered.
“They do this because they know that without NIN number, one cannot register for both WAEC and JAMB.
The students appealed to the Federal Government to come to their aid and save them from the hands of touts who capitalize on the policy to be extorting their parents.
Meanwhile, some of the NIN officials at both Ojo Local Government Area and LASU who spoke to our correspondent, while denying conniving with touts to extort the students, attributed the slow registration of the students to poor network; promising that once the network improves, their job will be easier.
